Privacy policy

Kanso is a notes app for Mac and iPhone. This page explains, in plain English, what data the app handles and how. The short version: your notes are yours, they live on your device and your iCloud, and we never see them.

Who runs Kanso

Kanso is built by Terran Vigil, an independent developer based in the United States. There is no company server, no analytics provider, and no third-party SDK collecting data from the app. If you have a privacy question, email terranvigil@gmail.com.

What data Kanso collects

None. Kanso does not collect, transmit, or store any personal information on any server we operate. We have no servers.

This applies to:

Kanso ships with no analytics SDK, no crash reporter, no advertising framework, and no tracking of any kind.

Where your notes live

Notes are saved as plain Markdown files on your device. If you have iCloud Drive enabled, those files are also synced via Apple's iCloud service to your other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple ID.

iCloud sync is provided by Apple, not by us. Apple's handling of your iCloud data is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. We never receive or have access to your iCloud-synced notes.

If you turn iCloud off, notes stay on your device only.

Optional features that contact other services

A small number of features make network requests, and only when you trigger them. They are off by default until you opt in.

AI features (bring-your-own-key)

If you add an Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google API key in Settings, the in-app AI features send what you type in the prompt to that provider's API using your key. If you also give a web address, Kanso downloads that page from your device and sends its text along with the prompt. Your other notes are never sent. Kanso asks for your permission before the first request to each provider. The request goes directly from your device to the provider; it does not pass through any server we control. Your API key is stored in the Apple Keychain on your device, the same secure storage Safari uses for saved passwords. Kanso has no way to read keys from any device other than the one they were entered on.

The provider's privacy policy applies to the data sent in those requests:

If you do not configure an API key, no AI features make network requests.

Recipe URL import

When you drop a recipe URL on the Recipes section, Kanso fetches that single page directly from the website you provided so it can extract the recipe metadata. The request is a normal HTTP GET; nothing about you or your other notes is sent.

Apple Reminders sync

If you grant Reminders access, Kanso reads from and writes to the Reminders app on your device using Apple's EventKit framework. This data never leaves your device through Kanso. Apple's Reminders Privacy guarantees apply.

You can revoke Reminders access at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Reminders.

Children

Kanso is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect any data from anyone of any age (since we do not collect data at all).

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top will change and the new version will be posted at this URL. Material changes will also be noted in the app's "What's New" release notes.
